Woman Killed in Fiery Crash on Interstate 5 [Bakersfield, CA]
SUV Versus Semi-Truck Collision Near Rowlee Road Kills 21-Year-Old Woman
BAKERSFIELD, CA (July 3, 2023) – Wednesday morning, a fiery crash in Interstate 5 involving a semi-truck left a woman fatally injured.
The two-vehicle collision happened around 10:30 a.m. along the northbound I-5, north of Rowlee Road.
Based on the investigation, a 2019 Volkswagen SUV veered into the number 2 lane while traveling at an unknown rate of speed.
Consequently, the SUV hit the rear-left side of a 2019 Kenworth tractor-trailer going at around 60 mph. The Volkswagen then overcorrected and came to a stop at the right shoulder of the freeway where it caught on fire.
The California Highway Patrol claimed that the fireworks on the trunk of the SUV ignited due to the collision.
Tragically, the 21-year-old front female passenger of the Volkswagen died at the scene. Meanwhile, the 27-year-old driver suffered minor injuries. Responding emergency personnel said the truck driver was uninjured.
In the end, firefighters closed the I-5 lanes in the area to put out the flames. Alcohol and drugs are not suspected to be factors in the crash.
