Fiery Crash near 605 Freeway Left Four Fatalities
DOWNEY, CA (June 30, 2023) – Early Saturday morning, at least four people were killed in a single-vehicle crash on 5 Freeway in Downey.
The incident happened around 2:30 a.m. along the southbound span of 5 Freeway, south of Lakewood Boulevard.
According to the investigators, a driver of a 2018 Dodge Charger lost control while traveling at high speed. Consequently, the Charger struck the guardrail and the bridge abutment on the Lemoran Avenue pedestrian crossover.
The CHP said the impact split the vehicle in half, ejecting the two rear passengers onto the right shoulder. Meanwhile, the driver and the front passenger remained inside as flames engulfed the vehicle.
Unfortunately, all four occupants of the Dodge Charger died at the scene. At this time, their identities have not been disclosed to the public, pending notification from their next of kin.
Downey Officials closed the two southbound lanes of 5 Freeway as Caltrans cleared out the scene.
