69-Year-Old Seaside Man Killed in Two-Vehicle Crash on Highway 1

MONTEREY COUNTY, CA (June 19, 2023) – Early Saturday morning, a fatal DUI collision on State Route 1 led to the arrest of Chris Witherspoon.

The fatal incident occurred around 3:45 a.m. along Highway 1 near the southbound lanes of Highway 68.

According to the investigators, a northbound gray 2017 Toyota Camry collided head-on with a Mitsubishi Mirage. Police said the impact disabled both vehicles in the middle of the freeway. 

Unfortunately, the 69-year-old male from Seaside driving the Mitsubishi died at the scene. At this time, the victim’s name remains undisclosed, pending notification from his next of kin. 

Meanwhile, police arrested and booked the Camry driver, 25-year-old Chris Witherspoon of Hope Hills, in Monterey County Jail. Witherspoon is charged with DUI, gross vehicular manslaughter, and other related charges. 

Monterey County Officials temporarily closed down State Route 1 to investigate the fatal DUI crash. Those with further information regarding the accident are encouraged to contact local authorities as soon as possible.
