55-Year-Old Driver Dies in Wrong-Way Collision near Foster Truck Trail

RAMONA, CA (April 3, 2023) – Friday afternoon, Carey Rufenacht was killed in a school bus crash on Mussey Grade Road.

Authorities responded to the scene shortly after 4:00 p.m., near Foster Truck Trail on March 24th.

Per reports, Rufenacht was driving a southbound 2003 Chevrolet 2500 when he lost control on a curving stretch and veered into the oncoming lanes. As a result, the Chevy collided with a northbound Ramona Unified School District bus.

The impact pushed the Chevy into a small dirt embankment and then back into the eastbound lanes. Emergency crews arrived and extricated Rufenacht from the severely damaged Chevy.

Medical personnel airlifted 55-year-old Rufenacht, of Ramona to Palomar Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

In addition, the bus was occupied by a driver and two children. The 48-year-old bus driver suffered minor injuries and was also transported to Palomar Hospital. However, the two children did not obtain any injuries.

At this time, an active investigation is still currently underway.
