Andrew Calderon Arrested after Two-Vehicle Crash near Shields Avenue
FRESNO, CA (February 21, 2023) – Wednesday night, a high-speed police pursuit ended in a two-vehicle crash that left Victor Cardenas dead.
The incident happened at around 11:00 p.m. near the intersection of First Street and Shields Avenue.
According to reports, officers pulled over a car for non-moving violations. The driver of the car, Andrew Calderon, initially cooperated with police. However, the driver then took off at high speeds away from the police.
The officers pursued the vehicle down Shields Avenue and ran a red light at Fresno Street. There, the car collided with a Chevy Cruze, driven by Cardenas. The impact of the collision left both drivers with serious injuries.
First responders to the crash, transported 29-year-old Victor Cardenas, of Fresno, to Community Regional Medical Center. Medics at the hospital later pronounced him dead due to the extent of his injuries.
Meanwhile, paramedics transported Calderon to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries. His two passengers refused medical treatment.
Police later arrested 40-year-old Andrew Calderon on numerous felony charges, including felony evasion causing death, felony DUI causing death, and vehicular manslaughter.
