Travione Cobbins and Ricardo Robles Hurt in Fatal Collision on South Vineland Drive

BAKERSFIELD, CA (January 25, 2023) – Early Thursday, Mario Lares was killed and Ana Hernandez and 2 officers were hurt in a multi-car crash.

Dispatchers received reports of a stolen GMC Sierra around 2:08 a.m., at the 3300 block of California Avenue near Oak Street on January 19th.

Police then began chasing the driver, later identified as 21-year-old Michael Stephens at a high rate of speed upon arrival.

Around 2:23 a.m., Lares was driving a 2013 Honda Accord and collided with a 2016 Ford Taurus patrol car at the intersection of South Vineland and Muller Road.

The Honda and the Ford ended up on the southwest corner of the intersection. Police stated that the patrol vehicle was its the way to arrest Stephens when the two vehicles collided.

Medics arrived and pronounced 30-year-old Lares dead at the scene. Meanwhile, crews airlifted a passenger inside the Honda, 24-year-old Hernandez to Kern Medical in serious condition.

In addition, the occupants inside the patrol vehicle were transported to a hospital with moderate to major injuries. Investigators later identified them as Travione Cobbins and Ricardo Robles.
