30-Year-Old Man Found Dead after Hit-and-Run Crash near California Street

MERCED, CA (January 11, 2023) – Late Saturday night, Michael Tamez was killed in a hit-and-run pedestrian crash on Santa Fe Drive. 

Officers located the deceased victim around 8:15 a.m., the next morning, just east of California Street. 

Per reports, the driver of an eastbound vehicle struck a male pedestrian that was walking in an easterly direction. Upon impact, the man was thrown onto the south shoulder.

Meanwhile, the driver continued traveling without rendering aid or contacting authorities.

Due to the extent of injuries sustained, medics pronounced 30-year-old Tamez, of Atwater dead at the scene.

At this time, the California Highway Patrol is asking anyone with further information about the Santa Fe Drive hit-and-run to contact (209) 356-6600.
