Michael Merlyn Mead Killed in Semi-Truck Accident on Highway 299 [Redding, CA]

69-Year-Old Man Fatally Struck in Head-On Collision near JFK Memorial Drive

REDDING, CA (August 24, 2022) – Late Thursday morning, Michael Merlyn Mead was pronounced dead after a semi-truck collision on Highway 299.

The incident occurred around 11:50 a.m.,  just east of John F. Kennedy Memorial Drive near the Whiskeytown Recreation Center.

Following preliminary investigations, officers say a red Ford Explorer collided head-on with a semi-truck, causing the SUV to spin out of control. Upon impact, the semi-truck caught on fire and burned 45 acres of nearby vegetation.

Due to the extent of injuries sustained, responding officials declared the SUV driver dead at the scene. Authorities later identified the deceased victim as 69-year-old Michael Merlyn Mead, of Hayfork.

The semi-truck driver, however, sustained minor injuries.

A large portion of the area was temporarily shutdown to allow for cleanup and preliminary duties. At this time, Redding Officials are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the Highway 299 traffic accident.
