Bicyclist Killed in Deadly Hit-and-Run near Lower River Road

BUCKEYE, AZ (May 31, 2022) – Saturday, George Cooper was killed and Fernando Ramos was arrested after a hit-and-run on Jackrabbit Trail.

Just after 6:00 a.m., police responded to the scene near Lower River Road on May 21st.

Per reports, Ramos struck the cyclist and fled the scene without rendering aid or calling for help.

Due to the impact of the crash, 60-year-old Cooper was pronounced dead at the scene.

Based on witness reports, officers began searching for a tan Chevrolet Avalanche pulling an empty flat bed trailer. Soon after, a deputy spotted a truck matching the description about 10 miles away from the scene.

Ramos admitted he had been involved in a crash and was taken into custody. Crews identified him as Fernando Ramos, 39, from Buckeye.

During an interview with investigators, Ramos reportedly said he did not see the bicycle until the last moment and couldn’t stop in time. Ramos said he panicked following the collision and that’s why he drove away.

Officers booked Ramos on manslaughter and hit-and-run charges. Ramos claimed he was going around the speed limit, but a crash recreation showed he was going around 60 mph in a 45 mph zone.
