Douglas Payne Arrested after Vehicle Crash on Interstate 5 [Carlsbad, CA]
Victim Pronounced Dead after Auto Collision near Cannon Road
CARLSBAD, CA (May 3, 2022) – Late Wednesday night, police arrested Douglas Payne after a fatal car accident on Interstate 5.
The incident occurred around 11:20 p.m. on the southbound lanes of the freeway near Cannon Road.
According to reports, a man was reportedly standing next to his disabled Ford Explorer on the right shoulder of the freeway.
There, a Honda driven by Payne collided with the Ford Explorer. The impact caused the Ford Explorer to then strike the male pedestrian.
Due to the extent of his condition, medics pronounced the man dead the scene. At this time, officials only described the victim as a 65-year-old man from Sun City.
Following preliminary duties, investigators eventually arrested 51-year-old Payne on suspicion of DUI.
Additionally, a large portion of the roadway was temporarily closed down to allow for cleanup and preliminary duties.
Authorities are still reviewing the crash for more details. Additional information will be provided as soon as it is available as an active investigation is currently underway.
