Two Killed, Two Hurt in Head-On Collision near Hammack Avenue
PERRIS, CA (April 19, 2022) – Early Monday morning, Emanuel Esparza and Carlos Zuniga were killed in a wrong-way crash on Highway 74.
The collision happened around 2:15 a.m., near Hammack Avenue, just northeast of Lake Elsinore.
According to reports, Zuniga was driving a westbound 2003 Ford Mustang that veered into the eastbound lanes for reasons unknown.
Meanwhile, Esparza was driving an eastbound 2017 Kia Forte in the No. 1 lane at an unknown speed. As a result, the Ford and Kia collided head-on.
Due to the extent of injuries sustained, crews pronounced both drivers dead at the scene. The deceased victims were later identified as 21-year-old Esparza, and 26-year-old Zuniga, both from Perris.
Meanwhile, medical personnel transported two others to a nearby hospital for further treatment. One victim was reportedly in serious condition.
The initial investigation said that speed played a factor in the crash, but it is still unknown what other factors led to the collision.
Moreover, both directions of the roadway were temporarily shutdown to allow for cleanup and preliminary duties. However, circumstances surrounding the crash remains under investigation.
