Brendan Bessee Fatally Struck in Deadly Crash on State Route 87 [Mesa, AZ]

EMT Driver Killed in Tractor-Trailer Collision near McDowell Road

MESA, AZ (April 15, 2022) – Friday afternoon, EMT driver Brendan Bessee was killed in a deadly crash on State Route 87.

The collision happened on State Route 87 near McDowell Road. Emergency crews responded to the scene shortly after.

Per reports, Brendan was driving the ambulance with its emergency lights on, responding to a call from a woman who was having a difficult with her pregnancy. While on its way, the ambulance was struck by a tractor-trailer while trying to make a turn onto SR-87.

Due to the extent of injuries sustained, medics pronounced Bessee dead. Meanwhile, paramedics also transported another EMT that was in the ambulance to a hospital in critical condition.

Moreover, the driver of the tractor-trailer was also taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Salt River Fire Chief said this is the first death in a line of duty for the department. The two victims in the ambulance had been with the department for less than four months.

At this time, the deadly collision remains under active investigation.
