Immanuel Oloya Dead, Jose Luis Chavez Arrested after Running Red Light on 12th Avenue [Tucson, AZ]
Driver Arrested after Fatal Collision on West Irvington Road
TUCSON, AZ (February 10, 2022) – Tuesday night, Immanuel Oloya was killed, and Jose Luis Chaves was arrested after a crash on 12th Avenue.
The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m., near West Irvington Road on February 1st.
A Tucson police officer attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle that ran at a red light at the intersection of South 12th Avenue and West Irvington Road.
After failing to halt, Chavez fled from police into the 5400 block of South Alaska Drive. There, he crashed into a nearby wall.
As cops responded to the scene, Chavez and a passenger fled the car. However, police were able to seize the driver in a nearby lane but were unable to track down the passenger.
Crews identified and arrested 19-year-old Chavez for leaving the scene of a fatal collision. Officers then booked him into the Pima County jail.
Additional responding officers discovered an adult male inside, identified as 18-year-old Oloya. Despite life-saving efforts, medics pronounced Oloya dead at the scene.
Following preliminary investigations, authorities determined that Chavez was not intoxicated at the time of the accident. Instead, his excessive speed and failure to stop at a stop sign were contributing factors.
Additionally, the occupants were not wearing seat belts at the time of the collision.
