Driver Critical After Suspected DUI Collision on Highway 140
MERCED, CA (August 24, 2021) – At least one person sustained injuries after a suspected DUI collision on Highway 140 last weekend in Merced.
The accident occurred around 11:35 p.m. near Kibby Road on Highway 140 east.
According to police, a 43-year-old male driver of a pickup collided with one of four cars stopped for road construction. According to the release, the driver of the pickup then drove off the road, and the vehicle caught fire.
Officers from the California Highway Patrol were able to reach the man and pull him out of the burning vehicle before it was completely consumed in flames.
Paramedics then airlifted the pickup driver to a hospital in Modesto and is still in critical condition.
Meanwhile, some medics assisted other occupants of the other vehicles involved who had suffered minor injuries.
Authorities did not release any additional information at this time. However, the cause of the accident and factors involved remain under investigation.
