Deadly Crash on Highway 101 Results in Multiple Casualties
GOLETA, CA (July 23, 2021) – A multi-vehicle crash on Highway 101 left two people killed and 4 people in critical condition, Thursday morning.
The fatal incident occurred around 7:55 a.m., involving all lanes of the highway near El Capitan Canyon Road.
Later on, investigators learned that a northbound Ford Expedition lost control and moved across the southbound lanes.
As a result, the 29-year-old Expedition driver from Santa Maria collided with the right front side of a Ford F-450.
In addition, the Expedition also collided with 3 more vehicles including a Dodge Grand Caravan, a Honda Accord, and a Chevy Bolt.
Subsequently, a Toyota Tundra truck also sustained damage by debris from the collision.
Two passengers inside the Expedition sustained major injuries and died at the scene. Meanwhile, paramedics transported the driver and the two other passengers inside the same vehicle to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.
At the same time, the driver of the Dodge Caravan was also transported to a hospital with major injuries. The three occupants of the Honda Accord were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Chula Vista officials closed down Highway 101 near El Capitán State Beach for several hours.
At this time, the authorities are still currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the multi-vehicle crash.
