Brian Chuc Killed, Michael Harris Arrested after Hit-And-Run on Bellevue Road [Merced, CA]
UC Merced Student Struck and Killed near Utah Street
MERCED, CA (July 16, 2021) – Monday night, authorities arrested Michael Harris after a hit-and-run crash that killed Brian Chuc.
The fatal incident happened around 8:00 p.m., on Bellevue Road and Utah Street. Officers arrived to the scene near UC Merced shortly after.
According to reports, Harris struck Chuc while he was riding on his bicycle west on Bellevue Road, approaching Utah Street.
Investigators say the bicyclist landed on the vehicle’s roof and was eventually thrown onto the roadway. Upon arrival, emergency responders pronounced Chuc dead at the scene.
Moreover, Harris fled the scene following the impact. About three hours later, Harris reached out to the police to let them know he hit a deer while driving.
Merced County Officials then arrested 64-year-old Michael Harris, of Ventura County. Harris was booked into the Merced County Jail for vehicular manslaughter and fatal hit-and-run charges.
Authorities also said that the area where Chuc was struck does not have bike lanes and should be safer for cyclists.
