Q&A with Ashkahn Mohamadi, Senior Trial Lawyer at Sweet James LLP
Q: How would you explain what you do as a personal injury attorney?
A: I fight for the little guys and gals. People that are going through the worst part of their lives. They can’t defend themselves, and they are being bullied by insurance companies and large corporations that refuse to take responsibility for the harm they have caused.
Q: Why did you choose to become a personal injury lawyer?
A: Honestly, I don’t think it was a choice. If I had to defend insurance companies and come up with excuses for why they don’t have to take responsibility for their negligence, I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night. I’m not saying those lawyers aren’t respectable professionals. I’m just saying I don’t think I would be any good at it.
Q: Do you like what you do?
A: I don’t like it, I love it. I always hesitate when people ask me that question because I don’t want to sound obnoxious. But I really feel that I have the best job in the world, helping those that need it the most.
Q: What is the toughest part of your job?
A: The stress. My clients are injured, they can’t work, and they need money for medical care they can’t afford. If I can’t get them justice, it could turn their entire life upside down. I think about that every day.
Q: What is the best part of your job?
A: Getting justice for my clients at the end of the case. Money won’t give my clients their loved ones back, or heal their broken bodies, but it does give them closure and security. The money is a symbol of the defense admitting that they were wrong, and they hurt somebody. It also allows the injured person to move on with their lives without worrying how they are going to put food on the table.
Q: Do you ever get nervous during a trial?
A: In my first couple trials I would definitely get a little nervous, but not anymore. I realized a while back that I only got nervous when I didn’t truly believe in my case. Because of that, I’ve become very picky about the cases I take, and now nerves aren’t really a factor.
Q: If you had to change one thing about your profession, what would it be?
A: The public perception. A lot of people call us “ambulance chasers” but they don’t realize that Plaintiff lawyers are the last line of defense for the people. When the government or powerful corporations cross the line, we push them back over. The insurance industry is one of the most powerful and most profitable on earth. They have no problem collecting your monthly premiums, but when it comes time for them to pay your medical bills, they will do whatever it takes to fight you. We make sure that fight is a fair one.
