5 Killed in Multi-Vehicle Collision near Morristown

WITTMANN, AZ (April 6, 2021) – Friday night, 37-year-old Michael Sytsma along with four other people were killed in a wrong-way crash on US-60.

The crash happened around 10:30 p.m., on the westbound lanes of the highway. Emergency crews arrived about 55 miles northwest of Phoenix.

Sytsma of Cave Creek, was traveling east on the westbound lanes in a white 2005 Nissan Titan pickup-truck without head lights on. As a result, he eventually struck a 2020 Chevrolet SUV head-on.

The impact caused the SUV to catch fire before becoming completely engulfed in flames.

Investigators say Sytsma was the only occupant inside the SUV, and he died on scene. In addition, four people were inside the SUV, all of which also died on scene.

Because of the fire, medical examiners had a difficult time identifying the deceased victims inside the SUV.  Moreover, officers are awaiting toxicology reports to determine whether or not Sytsma was intoxicated at the time.

Arizona Police say wrong-way accidents like these occur in the area far too often.
